Bare-eyed Cockatoos are roughly the same size and shape as the Goffin’s Cockatoo. They are entirely white or pinkish in color, except for the splash of orange near their beak. Just like the Goffin’s Cockatoo, they have a tiny little crest, resembling a shark’s fin, which stands up when they are surprised or excited. They get their name from the bare patch of blue skin around their eyes. All Cockatoos have this bare area, but the skin is swollen on a Bare-eyed. To someone who has never seen this species before, they will appear to have an eye infection or a strange growth under their eyes. However, this is completely normal for a Bare-eyed Cockatoo and is nothing to worry about. Average Lifespan: 20 – 30 years
Sexing: The sexes differ only in eye color, though all juvenile birds will appear to be female. After they have reached maturity (typically around 5 years of age) the females will retain a brown iris, while the males will turn almost black. The darker the iris, the more likely it is to be male.
Origin: Eastern and Northern Australia Trainability: Domestic hand-fed babies make excellent pet birds for dedicated caregivers. Arguably, these parrots are among the most affectionate animals on the planet! Bare-eyed Cockatoos are less demanding and noisy than most of the other Cockatoo species, and are loved for their clownish, affectionate personalities. Although the Bare-eyed Cockatoo can be slightly more independent than other Cockatoos, they still need a lot of attention. If you are unable to devote at least 4 hours of quality time to your parrot each day, then a Bare-eyed Cockatoo is not for you. They are extremely playful and acrobatic. Anything and everything is a toy to them especially if you don’t want them to have it. For this reason, we recommend a large variety of toys and plenty of supervision during play time. They can learn to speak, but are often difficult to understand. Bare-eyed Cockatoos will typically develop a small vocabulary of 5 or 6 of their favorite words and phrases, and males can get a little aggressive after 6-7 years
Loudness: Cockatoos, especially Umbrellas, are among the loudest of the parrot species, so if you’re sensitive to noise we would suggest looking into another species. These are certainly not apartment pets.
